About Ruhnu island...
Ruhnu island is situated in the middle of the Gulf of Riga and is an administrative part of Saare Country. The islands surface area is 11,9 km², lenght 5,5 and width 3,5 km. Ruhnu was mentioned for the first time by Courland bishop in 1341. Prior to 1944 it was for centuries populated by ethnic Swedes and traditional Swedish law was used. Ruhnu island is formed by a highest part of base ridge in the Gulf of Riga.
Nature of the island is extremely plentiful. The eastern part is sandy. There is a line of parallel sand dunes. Some dunes reach more than 21 meters above sea level. On the southwest side of the island there are coastal meadows and pastures with small fields. Highest point is Haubjerre mountain which stands 29.6 meters above sea level. On the Haubjerre mountain there is an old lighthouse designed and prefabricated in Le Havre, France The lighthouse was shipped to Ruhnu for assembly in 1877.
There is over 600 species registered in the islands flora. Most far-spread are composite and graminaceous plants. There are 23 rare vascular plant species. Over 100 species of birds are registered on the island. The most important semiaquatic species is Epidalea calamita.
Ruhnu is by far the sunniest place in Estonia! Really! It's because of the geographical location. In the summer when the sun heats up the ground the rising warm air dissolves all the clouds above the island. It's most clearly seen on the shore - above the island the sky is clear, but around the island there are clouds covering the sky.
